Storm Trysail Club Block Island Race Week XXII Presented
by Rolex
Fresh Breezes Bring New Life to Racing
BLOCK ISLAND, R.I. (June 21, 2007) -- Things got back to normal when
2000 sailors were greeted by a brisk northwest breeze this morning at
the Storm Trysail Club's Block Island Race Week XXII presented by Rolex.
After yesterday's fog and rain and the prior day's current and wind shifts,
today's game was more straightforward for the 183 teams competing in IRC,
PHRF and One-Design classes.
The smallest boat in the fleet, David German's (Tampa, Fla.) J/24 Mad
Cow in PHRF class 5, loved it when the wind transitioned smoothly
to a south-southwest seabreeze that reached a robust 16-18 knots by the
second of two races.
"Finally a breeze and we were able to do something," said German
back at the docks, thinking he had won the second race. "Light air
and choppy water are not great for a J/24, so we've been finishing third
a lot. We were resigned to the fact that we would be in trouble all week
with 5-10 knot forecasts, so we were real excited when it came up."
When handicaps were tabulated, however, German had a 3-2 to add to his
score line and maintained his third-place overall from yesterday. Beating
him out today with two first-place finishes and also to lead on the scoreboard
was Lincoln Schoenberger (Shelton, Conn.) aboard the Wyliecat 30 One
Up, one of the more unusual designs here, looking more like
a giant windsurfer than a sailboat. "It's a wishbone cat rig with
only one sail, a racer body, eliptical rudder and bulb fin," said
Schoenberger. "It doesn't point as well with jib boats but it points
remarkably well for a cat boat." Trailing by only one point in second
place is Chris Fesenmeyer's (Norwalk, Conn.) Air Express.
When the wind actually built as it switched, instead of dying as expected,
the crew aboard John Storck's (Huntington, N.Y.) J/80 Rumor
thought it might see trouble. "In really heavy or light air we have
an advantage, but medium air is where we have to work harder," said
Storck's 21-year-old daughter Kaity, who is steering Rumor.
In fact, all four of Storck's kids have joined him on the boat for this
event, and he couldn't have signed up better ringers if he had advertised.
Kaity won 2007 ICSA All-American honors at Tufts University this year
while son Erik is a three-time All American ('05, '06, '07) from Dartmouth
College and John Jr. is an All-American ('05) from Hobart College.
"I 've been doing this event for 40 years," said Storck. "I
started as a kid at 19 with my father and now my kids are doing it with
me, including my 13-year-old." For tomorrow, Kaity thought about
her approach: "We'll keep doing what we're doing. If you consider
we got two thirds today in what we consider tougher conditions for us,
we can do that again."
With seven races completed, PHRF classes were allowed a throw-out. The
IRC classes, however, have only sailed six races and will have to get
at least one race in tomorrow before they can discard their worst race.
With that, the race for the inaugural Rolex US-IRC National Championship
has heated up. Bob and Farley Towse's (Stamford, Conn.) Reichel/Pugh 66
Blue Yankee and Colm Barrington's (Dublin,
Ireland) Ker 50 Magic Glove are both leading
their classes-- IRC Super Zero and IRC Zero, respectively -- and are obvious
contenders, but Randall and Matt Baldwin's (Ridgefield, Conn.) Taylor
42 Cabady, which posted two bullets today to
lead IRC class 5, has a shot at what tactician Rich Long (Norwalk, Conn.)
calls the "big guys."
"We've had a whole lot of tight races," said Long. "We’re
the most competitive division, which should be helping us to get into
that formula." That formula is based on both fleet performance using
corrected boat speed and class competitiveness.
When all was said and done, it came down to thousandths of a corrected
knot in determining first and second in the nationals scoring: Blue
Yankee has 8.4 points, Cabady
has 8.2 points. Following in third is Preben Ostberg/John Aras/Bud Dailey's
(Annapolis, Md.) Tsunami with 8.0 points and
Magic Glove in fourth with 7.0 points.
"We won a few of our races by huge margins, so that might be hurting
us rather than helping us," said Magic Glove's
Barrington, who has as his tactician Robert Greenhalgh from the winning
Volvo Ocean Race boat ABN AMRO ONE. "All
you can do is sail your best, and if at the end of the day you've won
the champonship, that's a bonus."
Today was Mt. Gay Race Day, and Mt. Gay also sponsored the official party
under the event tent.
Compliments of Rolex, daily video shows of each day’s racing,
produced by T2Productions, are broadcast on-line each night by 9 p.m.
